Here is a list of 20 Smart Cities Selected by the Union Government for further development in first phase of initiatives. A 'Smart City' is an urban region that is highly advanced in terms of overall infrastructure, sustainable real estate, communications and market viability. These 20 cities will be the first to receive funds, thus kickstarting the process of developing them in to 'Smart cities'. The aim of the project is to promote economic growth , strengthen governance and improve results for urban residents. The final list of 20 cities are announced by the Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu.

These cities were selected out of a list of 100 shortlisted cities based on the score they achieved in various criteria. 'Smart City' project of the present government's initiative is a smart step towards progressive development and sustainable urbanisation with international standards of regional developments practices. Smart Cities are seen as modern pillars for development of India. Smart and developed cities are those which are facilitated with basic infrastructure and good quality of life through smart solution. These cities if developed as per plan will have better infrastructure , connectivity and governance.
These smart cities are developed with :-
- Assured Electricity Supply
- Health and Education
- Adequate water supply
- Sanitation, including solid waste management
- Sustainable environment
- Affordable housing, especially for the poor
- Robust IT connectivity and digitalization
- Good governance, especially e - governance and citizen participation
- Promote development like building school, organisation, shopping malls etc.
- provides employment to its residents
