How to Mute Multiple Noisy Chrome Tabs At Once?

Sometimes you run across a tip that's just so awesome you must want to share it with the world as soon as possible. The other day I came across the Google Chrome extension that you can mute all browser tab at once by using a keyboard shortcut. A addition of keyboard shortcuts and Google Chrome audio controls?

One of the great thing is that Google Chrome is allow you to mute any tab with a single click. Mozilla Firefox is still working on this too. This is a very handy feature for those times when you hit a site with auto-play audio video. Instead of searching the page for the desecrate media, You just click on the audio icon on the tab and you are done with this.

Things get annoying, inspite of, when you have an option to mute all the Google Chrome tabs at a same time. It's easy and very than the click on every tab to mute one by one. But one button of the keyboard is much better to mute the noisy chrome tabs.

First, you need to download the extension Mute Tab shortcuts in the Chrome web store. Now, let's make sure you have got tab audio muting enabled on your copy of Google Chrome. Type or copy Google Chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting into Google Chrome's address bar and click enable. If it says disable, just leave it alone. You are active already.

Relaunch Chrome Browser

For those who had to enable audio muting, You'll see an alert at the bottom of the page asking you to restart the Google Chrome browser. Click on the relaunch now button.

Mute current tab: Alt + Shift + M
Mute all tabs: Alt + Shift + Comma (,)
Unmute all tabs: Alt + Shift + Period (.)
There are the default shortcuts of the keyboard. If you want to change shortcuts you can change them by typing chrome://extensions in the address bar. Then scroll down to the bottom and then click on keyboard shortcuts. A pop-up windows will open on the screen. Find the section under "Mute Tab Shortcuts" edit away and click ok when your are done.

The Google Chrome extension works very well and doesn't really do anything which have not expected. e.g: Mute all the tabs with the shortcut and then just click on one muted tab to enable the audio. The only odd behavior is that you can you a keyboard shortcut to mute all the tabs at once, You'll see a mute icon across all to open tab of the browser, even the tabs without audio playing.

Another issue is to be aware of is that muting all the tab affects only the tab you had opened when you type the shortcut of the keyboard. If you open a new tab with autoplay audio and video, It'll not be muted like the others. Inspite of , you can easily mute it by clicking on the audio icon on the tab or typing Alt + Shift + Comma again to mute all tabs.
