How to Diagnose and Fix a Dead Laptop Keyboard

With a laptop, you can't simply purchase a new keyboard and plug it in. It is difficult to replace. It's best to find another fix before you take the big dive. If you don't have any external keyboard, buy one. It's not practicable replacement for the built in keyboard. But it will let you log into windows with your password. It will also help you use your computer while taking out the fantastic solution.

First you have to find out whether this is a hardware problem or a software one. To do that boot from a live Linux disc or flash USB drive. The version of Linux doesn't matter, Ubuntu will do well. The point is that you will be running your hardware without running the windows.

Once you have booted into Linux, bring up any application into which you can type. A browser will do that. Ubuntu comes with LibreOffice Writer, you can write a entire novel with that.

If the keyboard works in Linux, keep reading. Otherwise, skip down to the "you have got a hardware problem" section below.

You’ve got a software problem

If you can type outside of windows, you have probably got a corrupted keyboard driver. You will need to exchange it with the one that came the laptop.
Boot back into windows, now use the start menu's search field or windows 8 search to search for and open device manager.

In device manager, find and enhance the keyboeard section and double click your internal keyboard. If you have external keyboard connected, make sure you pick the internal one. If you are not sure about it, unplug the external eyboard first.

In the dialog box, click the driver tab, then click uninstall. When the uninstall is completed, you keyboeard definitely not work.

But when you restart your windows, it will automatically reinstall the original driver. Hope this will solve your problem.

You’ve got a hardware problem

If you have few key fail, dirt and dust may be the culprits. So try cleaning the keyboard. You'll want a can of compress air. I have seen them for less than three dollars. Shut down the thin straw that came with the can to direct burst of air under the keys.
It is difficult to concentrate on the keys. If  this idea doesn't work then you should replace your keyboard.
