UPSC IFS Exam Syllabus 2016-2017

IFS Exam Syllabus 2016-2017

However, for making preparations a candidate is required to possess the right knowledge about the syllabus of the exams. Candidates who belong to the SC category have unlimited attempts to apply this form.Those who belong to OBC category can apply 9 attempts and for those who are in General category can apply 6 attempts.SC/ST category candidates and women are exempted from fee and the candidates who lies in the General category would have to pay 100 Rupees by depositing through any SBI branch whether it's online or offline.UPSC IFS Exam cosists of two Exam which has been described below.

 (i) Preliminary Examination: The exam will have two papers, which are compulsory, and having 200 marks each. The duration of each paper will be of 2 hours. Extra time of 20 minutes will be available for blind candidates.
(ii) Main Examination: The following papers will be held for the Main IFS Exam.
Paper I -> General English -> 300 marks
Paper II -> General Knowledge -> 300 marks
Paper III, IV, V & VI – Any two subjects to be selected from the list of optional subjects set out below. Each subject will have two papers. -> 200 marks each.

Part I- IFS Preliminary Exam

Paper I – 200 Marks – Duration Two Hours

Current events of national and international importance
History of India and Indian National Movement
Indian and World Geography‐ Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
Indian Polity and Governance‐ Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
Economic and Social Development‐ Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social, Sector Initiatives, etc.
General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio‐diversity and Climate Change ‐ that do not require subject specialization.
General Science.
Paper II – 200 Marks

Comprehension
Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision making and problem solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. ‐ Class X level)

Part II- IFS Main Exam

Paper I – 300 Marks (English)

This paper includes questions relating to English usage. Preparing on the below mentioned chapters would be adequate:

Essay Writing Adjectives Noun Pronoun
Prepositions Antonyms Synonyms Sentence Correction
Paper II – 300 Marks (General Knowledge)

This paper includes questions on general awareness. Though there cannot be a specific syllabus for this subject as questions can be asked from anywhere, but going over the following areas will be helpful:

Research and Development Indian politics Indian History Geography
Indian Constitution Environment Book- Author Sports-Personality
Paper III to VI can be elected from various options. The purview of the syllabus will depend on the selected paper. Most of the times, the syllabus matches with the Bachelor’s degree syllabus which a candidate has already studied. Nevertheless, there can be exceptions at times. As a candidate, it is necessary to ensure that each paper is seen as a fresh challenge. The option of set off against some other paper is not available.

Paper III will be conducted from the optional subjects.List of optional subjects is given below:

Agricultural Engineering
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
Botany
Chemistry
Chemical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Forestry
Geology
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Physics
Statistics
Zoology
Provided that the candidates will not be allowed to offer the following combination of subjects:
Agricultural and Agricultural Engineering
Agricultural and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
Chemistry and Chemical Engg.
Mathematics and Statistics.
Of the Engineering subjects viz. Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering – not more than one subject;
