Facts About Jallikattu Sport - Ancient Tamil Nadu's Game
1. Jallikattu is an ancient bull taming sport played in Tamil Nadu. This game was played on the eve of Pongal on the Mattu Pongal day which is widely known as Makar Sakranti.
2. This game was named as Jallikattu from calli kacu which means coins and kattu which means a packages. So in this game a package of money was tied to the horns of a bull as winning prize.
3. Jallikattu is played in the old village of Tamil Nadu and believed to be the oldest sport in the villages. This game is a blood sport which is believed to be played in 1000 BC.
4. This game consists of variants. These include vaṭi viraṭṭu where a bull being released from an enclosure need to be held on to for a predetermined distance or time to win the prize, vēli viraṭṭu where a bull is released in an open ground with players trying to tame the animal and vaṭam manjuviraṭṭu where a bull is tied to a 50-foot-long rope and a team of players attempt to subdue the bull within a specific time.
5. This game was banned because this sport results in serious injuries and many deaths. So it is banned by the government of India.
6. Between 2010 to 2014 it was reported that more than 1100 people had seriously injured during this game and more than 17 people derived to death. In the last two decades over 200 people have lost their lives while playing this sport.
7. Supreme Court banned this sport last year.
8. The supreme court has been prohibited the use of bulls in "Jallikattu" and if anybody try to do it then it'd be offence under the law.
9. In Jan 2016 central government lifted the ban on the request of Tamil Nadu government. But this notification was challenged by PETA in the supreme court of India.
10. Jallikattu can't be organised in the year 2016.
